The Malignant mesothelioma (often shortened as mesothelioma) is a rare form of malignancy caused by exposure to asbestos - natural fiber-like minerals that are resistant properties to the original heat. During the first half of the twentieth century, this disease rose from obscurity to become a problem of occupational health and primary audience in the late twentieth and early twenty-first century.

The relationship between asbestos exposure and mesothelioma subsequent revelation was set established in 1960, and so far is the occupational malignancy most important (regardless of lung cancer) among industrial workers. Although a layer of the stack formed by these cells (called mesothelium) provide the protective surface and the non-adhesive, also has a role in the transport of batteries and liquid across the surface of the wall and the body organs.

The Evil One change in cells and mesothelial mesothelium leads to malignant mesothelioma - an aggressive tumor mainly from pleural spaces, but also peritoneal and pericardial. The Malignant pleural mesothelioma is the most commonly presented with dyspnea and pain nonpleuritic chest wall, with at least one of them occurring in 60-90% of patients. Those cardinal symptoms can be associated with constitutional symptoms as well, especially weight loss, malaise and occasional night sweats.

Radiological findings of Frequently presentation include effusion, pleural masses and pleural thickening. The computed tomography (CT) is more sensitive to determine the extent of anomalies and pleural involvement of adjacent structures. The aspirate is an exudate in the pleural reduced glucose levels and pH. The diagnosis is confirmed with a biopsy and microscopic examination.

Hope of Life for malignant pleural mesothelioma diagnosed is usually poor, with median survival ranging between 8 and 12 months (regardless of histologic type). That after the introduction of cytoreductive surgery followed by intraperitoneal hyperthermic perfusion, a significant prolongation in the median survival was achieved for malignant peritoneal mesothelioma, with nearly half of patients alive at 5 years.

Because new agents are being explored for the disease, new combinations of therapies being tried and the new identified biomarkers, there is a reasonable expectation that the median survival rate for mesothelioma patients increase in the coming years. Nevertheless, it remains a very serious disease with poor and low survival rates prognosis.
